The Strengthening Medicare Aged Care Initiatives were introduced by the Commonwealth on 1 July 2004. The major component of this initiative was the ACGPPI (Aged Care GP Panels Initiative). The May 2007 Budget saw the ACGPPI expand further to include allied health professionals (AHPs) as a part of the Aged Care - improved health services for residents of aged care homes.
It was advised in the 2008-2009 Federal Budget that the Aged Care GP Panels Initiative funding would cease from 1 July 2008. The Panels Initiative would be replaced with a new program, Aged Care Access Initiative (ACAI), which would take effect from 1 July 2008. The ACAI is aimed at facilitating RACFs to access AHP services for low level care residents.
